What the test includes
A standard urinalysis combines:
- macroscopic assessment (appearance, color)
- chemical dipstick analysis (pH, protein, glucose, ketones, nitrites, leukocyte esterase)
- microscopic examination of the sediment (WBC, RBC, casts, crystals, bacteria)
Together, these can point to anything from a simple infection to signs of more serious kidney or urological pathology.
Consistent with a normal picture
No significant white or red blood cells, negative nitrites, and no clinically concerning findings.
Suspicion of urinary infection
White blood cells, positive leukocyte esterase and/or nitrites, especially alongside symptoms such as dysuria or urinary frequency.
High-priority finding
Persistent hematuria or significant proteinuria calls for targeted investigation (culture, imaging, nephrology assessment).

Main indications:
- symptoms of a urinary tract infection
- investigation of hematuria
- monitoring known kidney disease
- screening in diabetes, hypertension, or before surgery
The test acts as a screening tool that determines who needs further investigation.
Correct sample collection for a reliable result
Correct collection reduces false positives:
- a midstream sample is preferred
- local cleaning beforehand
- a sterile container
- prompt delivery to the laboratory
Poor collection technique increases contamination and can lead to a wrong diagnosis or unnecessary antibiotics.
Interpreting common combinations of findings
Indicative patterns:
- WBC + nitrites + symptoms: likely bacterial urinary infection
- RBC without significant white cells: warrants work-up for stones, a tumor, or another cause of hematuria
- protein + casts: raises the likelihood of kidney involvement
- glucosuria/ketonuria: suggests a metabolic disorder rather than a primary urological condition
The final interpretation is never based on the urine alone — it always takes the history and clinical picture into account.
